Metropol, a Turkish newspaper founded in 1930 by Ali Kemal Bey, is one of the leading dailies in Turkey. In April 2013, the Antalya branch held an auction to raise funds for its renovation project. The auction took a surprising turn as a meek-looking woman who was standing at the entrance of its building called out to those present: "I have money." She turned out to be Sabiha Gökçen Kalfatoğlu, aged 72 years old and living nearby. She donated 22 million Liras (approximately $7 million) to the newspaper's renovation project. Her donation is the highest amount ever given to a foundation in Turkey. Who is Sabiha Gökçen? She was born on Apr 29, 1941 in Ankara. Her father was İsmet İnönü, the second President of Turkey who was later elected as the first President of Turkey's Grand National Assembly after Atatürk's death. Her mother, Münevver İnönü, was the daughter of Ismail Enver Pasha, who was one of the triumvirate leaders along with Talaat and Djemal during World War I and went on to serve as Minister of War during Turkish War of Independence. Sabiha Gökçen Kalfatoğlu married İbrahim Gökçe, the son of İsmet İnönü, in 1972. The couple had two children: Doğan Ali and Ulviye.Sabiha Gökçen is an Honorary Member of the Board of Trustees of the Istanbul Foundation for Science and Culture (Istanbul Bilim ve Teknik Üniversitesi Yapılanmasını Destekleme Derneği) where she has served since 2006.
